Held as a music director of repute in Hindi cinema, Raam Laxman is a pianist and accordionist, who made his debut with an orchestra called the Amar - Vijay Orchestra. Vijay Patil paired with another musician, Raam. Vijay is the "Laxman" of famous duo composers Raam-Laxman. Sadly, in 1976, Raam passed away immediately after signing the film Agent Vinod. Still Laxman continued to retain Raam's name in Marathi as well as Hindi films. He caught the attention of the famous Marathi comedian, Dada Kondke who offered him to compose the music for his Marathi comedy, Pandu Hawaldar.

Since then, Raam Laxman has composed music for almost 75 films in Hindi, Marathi and Bhojpuri. He created his own style of music which is most identifiable in the 1989 hit film Maine Pyar Kiya. Most of his releases were with Ravindra Rawal, and only lyricists, Anjaan and Indeevar did a film each with him. His biggest hit was in the year 1988, with Sooraj Barjatya's film Maine Pyar Kiya, which is considered one of the most successful films and musicals of the 1980’s. After this, Raam Laxman’ association with lyricist Asad Bhopali lasted for only one more film, since the latter passed away due to chronic alcoholism.

Some of his faithful associates continued to work with Raam Laxman such as Dada Kondke, Pranlal Mehta, Deepak Bahry, and Rajshri Productions with whom his Marathi films include Goonche Lage Hai Khilne and 'Sultana Sultana’ (Tarana), ‘Deva O Deva Ganapati Deva’ (Humse Badkar Kaun), ‘Saathi Tera Naam Ek Din’ (Ustadi Ustad Se), and his songs from Bezubaan.

He also did films with Manmohan Desai, Mahesh Bhatt, G. P. Sippy, Anil Ganguly and others. His chart-bursting hits include ‘Kabhi Linking Road’ from Patthar Ke Phool, ‘Paigham De Rahi Hai’ (Anmol), a sly rework of Shankar Jaikishan’s Chori Chori classic ‘Yeh Raat Bheegi Bheegi’ and some moderately hit songs from 100 Days, Baharon Ki Manzil and Saatwan Aasman.

Laxman scored a major hit once again with Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994). His collaboration with Sooraj Barjatya went on and he gave good hits in the film Hum Saath Saath Hain. His hit songs include ‘Dil Deewana’, ‘Kabootar Ja Ja Ja’, ‘Aaja Shaam Hone Aaye’ and ‘Mere Rang Mein’, all from Maine Pyar Kiya, and ‘Didi Tera Devar Deewana’, ‘Joote De Do’, ‘Chocolate, Lime Juice’ and ‘Maye Na Maye’, all from Hum Aapke Hain Kaun.
