He debuted in 1950 with the film Sangram. He played character roles with ease. He acted in approx. 70-80 films inhis career. Some of the noticeable films are Naujawan, Baap Re Baap, Naya Daur, jaagte Raho, Chalti Ka Naam Gadi, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Balika Badhu etc.
Her real name was Khurshid Akhtar. She debuted with 1945s Zeenat. She was named Shayam by the director Vijay Bhatt. In her career she acted in more than 100 films. Her noticeable works are Aar Paar,Mirza Sahiban, Barsat Ki Raat, Tarana, Bhai Bhai, Sharda, Chhoo Mantar, Musafir Khana etc. She was married to cinematographer Fali Mistry. She died on November 14, 2017.

Cuckoo made her screen debut in the film Arab Ka Sitara in 1946. Her dance number in his film Anokhi Ada (1948) established her as the lead dancer of the era and in Andaz (1949), a romantic drama starring Nargis, Dilip Kumar, and Raj Kapoor, gave the dancing star an opportunity to display her acting skills.
